DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE
18 - 28 September 2009
Alana Kakoyianis [ www.alanakakoyiannis.com], a par excellence filmmaker, attempts a selective retrospective not of her output but of her medium as materialised technology.
Through the process of unearthing and appropriating a found collection of thousands of ex-rental VHS tapes - a cult landmark of the Old Nicosia- Kakoyianis (re)constructs a mount of apocalyptic formations, unreeling prophecies and recollections of technological ghosts and modes of entertainment.
The sensual geology of 'DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE' oozes of references to earthworks, minimalism and performance relics all structural components of Kakoyiannis' artistic practise. Yet the ironic harmony of this installation's eroding elements narrate a memorial to the ever shifting conventions of time as matter, mimicking and mocking battle cries for the preservation and rehabilitation of not least historical, technological and spatial memory.
