DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS!
12-27 MARCH 2010
DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! consisting of recent works from the APOTHEKE collection, provides at first a review of its artistic and institutional tactics up to date, while negotiating the notions of a juvenile Cypriot art-market.
Laughing in the face of the local monolithic understandings of patronage with its basis on excess capital and social status turf wars a group show like DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! is nonetheless both a marketing device as well as an exercise in curatorial knowledge.
At this convergence of the personal and the social, APOTHEKE turns to a network of risk-taking practises and works. From coinage offences to trespassing and public (self-)mockery, from a near-negation of material and stylistic signifiers to risqué playing with theoretical concepts, DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! showcases in these 13 artists' works a cross-section of contemporary art which lies beyond the production of ornaments or shallow political commentary, against the accumulated misery of mannerism and the often state-subsidised financial querulousness.
Artists on show include: Antonis Antoniou, Barbara Chandler, Charlotte Jarvis, Alana Kakoyiannis, Alexia Kirmitsi, Glavkos Koumides, Phanos Kyriacou, Orestis Lambrou, MCP, Akira Mushi, E. Panagiotidis, Yervant Der Parthogh, Constantinos Taliotis and Maria Toumazou.
Curated by Demetris Taliotis..
